Moore who first studied sculpture in 1919 at Leeds College of Art began by working in the traditional Victorian manner of working from drawings and measurements. At the same time he was developing his technique of direct carving. His early influences were primitivism and the art of many different countries. He was also influenced by the works of Brancusi and Epstein.

As his work developed he became more and more abstact having been inspired by the works of Picasso, George Braque and Alberto Giacometti. His legacy is an inspiring collection of large and small works.
